This detailed map of Japan by Nicolas Sanson originates ftom "Description de tout l’Univers...L'usage des globes celestes et terrestres et des spheres" (Description of the whole Universe...The use of celestial and terrestrial globes and spheres) by Nicolas Bion. The author depicts the island chain oriented east-west between the ‘Isle de Corey’ (Korea) and the ‘Terre de Iesso’ (Hokkaido). The work was published in Amsterdam in 1700 by Francois Halma. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) was oft considered the father of French cartography. He produced over 300 maps in his career, noted for their sharp style and research. He and his son, Guillame Sanson, produced many notable maps and atlases together. Nicolas Bion (1652-1733) was the most famous French inventory of scientific instruments. He served as the "King's engineer for mathematical instruments" under Louix XIV. He produced terrestial and celestial globes in the 1700s.
