"Carte du Detroit de Cook dans la N. Zelande"

This hand-coloured engraving is from ”Relation des Voyages entrepris par ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique” James Cook’s first voyage ”Relation des Voyages entrepris par ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique”. The work was published by Jean-Nicolas-Louis Hamelin in Paris from 1778-1785.

James Cook's first voyage, from 1768 to 1771, aimed primarily to observe the transit of Venus and explore the Pacific. Departing from Plymouth, England, Cook sailed the HMS Endeavour, charting various islands and coasts, including Tahiti and New Zealand. His meticulous navigation and successful completion of scientific objectives laid the foundation for subsequent exploration in the Pacific region.
